Minecraft Is Coming to Nintendo Switch 2
Advanced lighting, volumetric fog, and 60fps handheld — what Bedrock on Switch 2 means for server owners.

During the June 2026 Nintendo Direct, Mojang and Nintendo announced that Minecraft: Bedrock Edition will launch as a launch-window title for the Nintendo Switch 2. The new port takes advantage of the Switch 2's upgraded hardware to deliver features previously exclusive to higher-end platforms, including advanced lighting, volumetric fog, and consistent 60 frames per second in both handheld and docked modes.
What's New in the Switch 2 Port
- 60fps gameplay: Both handheld and docked modes target a stable 60fps, a significant upgrade from the original Switch's 30fps
- Advanced lighting: Ray-traced lighting support via the Switch 2's custom NVIDIA GPU, including directional shadows and emissive block glow
- Volumetric fog: Dynamic fog rendering that matches the Java Edition's atmosphere, particularly striking in the new Sulfur Caves biome
- Increased render distance: Up to 24 chunks in docked mode, compared to 12 on the original Switch
- Gyro controls: Full motion-aiming support for bow and crossbow combat
- Cross-play: Full Bedrock cross-play with Xbox, PlayStation, PC, and mobile — the same as the current Bedrock network
What This Means for Server Owners
If you run a Bedrock-compatible server (or a cross-play Java + Bedrock server via GeyserMC), the Switch 2 port is great news. Millions of new potential players will join the Bedrock ecosystem with a console that can actually keep up. Here's what to consider:
- Expect higher player counts: The performance upgrade makes Switch 2 a viable primary platform for serious Minecraft play. Your server may see an influx of new Bedrock players
- GeyserMC compatibility: If you run GeyserMC to allow Bedrock clients on your Java server, the Switch 2 port connects the same as any other Bedrock client — no additional configuration needed
- Resource pack support: The Switch 2 port supports custom resource packs and skin packs, so your server's branding will carry over
Release Window
Minecraft: Bedrock Edition for Switch 2 is expected to launch alongside the console itself in the later half of 2026. Pre-orders are expected to open alongside Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders. Existing Minecraft owners on the original Switch may receive a discounted upgrade path, though pricing has not been confirmed.
Lodgichost Ready
All Lodgichost Minecraft plans already support Bedrock connections via built-in GeyserMC configuration. When the Switch 2 port launches, your server will be ready to accept players immediately — no migration, no extra setup. If you run a Java-only server and want to open it up to Bedrock players (including Switch 2), enable GeyserMC from the Lodgichost portal with a single toggle.
What the Handheld Experience Actually Changes
For server owners, the Switch 2's handheld mode has a side effect worth planning for: players are far more likely to join from Wi-Fi on the go than from a docked, wired console. That means your server's built-in DDoS protection and edge filtering matter more than ever, because handheld play on mobile networks tends to produce more connection churn and a wider variety of source IPs. We also expect shorter, more casual sessions in handheld mode. If your server relies on a minimum-player count to start minigames or events, consider lowering those thresholds so impromptu Switch 2 players can still get into a game quickly.
A Checklist for Server Owners
If you expect Switch 2 players, run through this short list before the launch window opens:
- Confirm GeyserMC/Floodgate is active in the Lodgichost portal and that port 19132 (UDP) is reachable from the internet
- Test the Bedrock connection string (port 19132) yourself from a Bedrock device, not just the Java address
- Update or remove resource packs that reference Java-only features, since Bedrock clients may ignore unknown pack entries
- Set a sensible player cap headroom — the Switch 2 launch could temporarily spike Bedrock join attempts within hours of release
The Switch 2 port is one of the most significant Minecraft platform releases in years. With proper hardware finally powering Bedrock on a Nintendo console, server owners can look forward to a healthier, more active cross-play community. Log in to your Lodgichost portal to make sure your server is ready.
