Getting Started with Your First Minecraft Server
Set up your first Minecraft server in under 5 minutes with Lodgichost.

Standing up your first Minecraft server feels like a big step — choosing a plan, picking a version, deciding between vanilla and modded, then connecting players. The reality is that a working server is minutes away, and most of the early decisions are easy to change later. What matters most at the start is understanding the three things you actually control: your plan's resources, your server software, and how players reach you. This guide walks through ordering, provisioning, connecting, and the small set of checks you should do before telling your community that the server is open.
Step 1: Choose Your Plan
Log in to the Lodgichost Portal and navigate to the Minecraft hosting section. Select a plan based on the number of players you expect. For a small server with up to 5 players, the Spark plan (2 GB RAM) is a great starting point. Larger groups will benefit from the Pulse (4 GB) or Core (8 GB) plans, especially if you plan to run modpacks.
Step 2: Configure Your Server
After selecting a plan, you will be prompted to choose your server version. We support the latest Minecraft releases, including the most recent stable version. You can also select from popular modpacks like CurseForge or FTB if you prefer a modded experience. Choose your preferred data centre location — we recommend selecting the one closest to your player base for the lowest latency.
Step 3: Complete Payment
Review your order summary and complete payment. Your server will begin provisioning immediately after payment is confirmed. In most cases, your server will be ready within 45 seconds. You will receive your connection details via email and in the portal dashboard.
Step 4: Connect and Play
Once provisioned, launch Minecraft, navigate to Multiplayer → Add Server, and enter your server address:
Server Name: My Lodgichost Server Server Address: your-server-ip:25565
If you are having trouble connecting, check that your server is running in the portal and that your firewall allows connections on port 25565.
Step 5: Manage Your Server
You can manage your server through the Lodgichost portal, where you can restart, stop, change game modes, install plugins, and adjust server properties. For advanced configuration, we provide SFTP access so you can upload world files, mods, and configuration files directly.
sftp your-username@your-server-ip Password: [your-portal-password] sftp> ls /home/minecraft/
First Launch Checklist
Before you share the address with your community, run through this short checklist to catch the issues that ruin a first session:
- Confirm the server shows as Online in the portal and that startup finished with no errors in the console.
- Join once yourself to verify the world generated, spawn is safe, and your connection works over the IP and port you will share.
- Op yourself (or assign a rank) so you can use commands, then set important properties like difficulty, motd, and whether to keep inventory on death.
- Turn on whitelist mode until you are certain the server is public-ready, then invite players a few at a time.
Keeping an eye on the console and memory graphs during your first sessions will also tell you quickly whether your plan's resources match how your community actually plays.
Troubleshooting
- Can't connect: Check the server is running in the portal. Ensure your firewall allows outbound connections to port 25565.
- Connection timed out: Verify the IP and port are correct. Some networks block Minecraft traffic — try switching to a mobile hotspot to test.
- Outdated client: Make sure your Minecraft launcher is updated to the same version as the server.
- Server not starting: Check the server logs in the portal for crash reports. Common causes are insufficient RAM or incompatible plugins.
Quick Tips
- Use our automated backup feature to protect your world data.
- Enable whitelist mode to control who can join your server.
- Install performance-enhancing plugins like Lithium and Phosphor for smoother gameplay.
- Set up a Discord bot to display server status and player counts.
Frequently Asked Questions
How fast will my server be ready after ordering?
Most servers are provisioned within about 45 seconds of payment confirmation. You will see the status change to Online in the portal and receive your connection details by email and on the dashboard.
Which server software should beginners choose?
Start with vanilla to learn, or choose Paper if you plan to add plugins for ranks, protections, and economies. Both are offered in the portal. Modded play picks a modpack and its loader instead.
How do I share my server with friends?
Send them your server address (IP and port, usually 25565) from the portal dashboard. They add it in Minecraft under Multiplayer → Add Server and join. Set a memorable motd so the server is easy to identify.
What should I do first to keep the server secure?
Set a strong portal password and enable two-factor authentication, turn on whitelist mode, and configure a permissions plugin so only trusted players have builder or admin rights. Back up your world before making big changes.
Can I switch plans or versions later?
Yes. You can upgrade or downgrade your plan and change most settings through the portal at any time. Moving between vanilla, Paper, and different Minecraft versions is possible, though switching from one to another may reset your world unless you migrate it first.
